WHAT IS NASC?
An initiative of Auto Monitor, India's premier automotive business magazine, together with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the apex body of Indian vehicle manufacturers, National Automotive Styling Challenge (NASC) is India's first industry award for young and aspiring engineering and design students. A design and styling challenge with a difference, NASC aims to provide a platform to young engineers and designers, aspiring to make a mark in the world of automotive design, and offering solutions to the modern-world industry and transportation needs.
THE BEGINNING
The National Automotive Styling Challenge (NASC) kicked off in 2007, culminating with the Auto Expo in January 2008. In its first year, the competition received tremendous response from all across the country, and also attracted a sole entry from a prestigious institution in the United Kingdom.
The theme for the first year was a 'True Indian Vehicle' that recognises and exhibits Indian culture, customs, values, traditions, beliefs, taste, etc.
From the initial 60 entries, nine entries were selected by a jury comprising stalwarts from the industry to the second stage, which involved model making in scale of 1:5.
The models were put on display at a special NASC stall at the Auto Expo 2008. The NASC stall attracted several senior dignitaries from the industry and government, often offering the participating students with valuable feedback. A popular choice award was also instituted, offering regular visitors an option to vote for their favourite models.
